Below we share with you our views on our favorite foods and situations we recommend them:
Orijen is considered “Biologically Appropriate” dog food made from fresh regional ingredients.
What we like about that food is that it has highest content of meat (85%) on the market, thus content of starch (15%). We all know that starch feeds yeast and promote the inflammation so that food is great for itchy dogs with yeast or reoccurring ear infection.
The food is manufactured by the Canadian company Champion Pet Food in their Kentucky plant where their control not only manufacturing processes but also sourcing and contract local farmers to rise animals in their way. All meats used in the food are either free range or wild caught.
Orijen comes in multiple variety:
We recommend Orijen for larger breeds, with no stomach sensitivity. It works great for dogs with yeast based issues (itchiness, staining, ear infection).
Acana is made by the same manufacturer in the same plant and with the same value. It comes in 3 lines and it’s important that you understand the difference before you make your decision
1) Acana Regionals (70% of meat)
This is a premium food with high amount of meat and low amount of starch (30%) when comparing to other popular brands. The meat used in this food is a premium quality.
We recommend this food to dogs of all sizes and breeds.
Because of still high content of meat and lower starch, we still recommend this food to dogs with yeast issues (scratching, doggie’s smell, reoccurring ear infection, ect). We usually recommend to start with fish variety as fish is the easiest for the switch, but we recommend to alternate the variety.
Acana Regionals come in following variety:
2) Acana Heritage (60% of meat)
60% of meat is still more than most of the popular foods have, yet the prices for those foods are extremely reasonable. Based on our research, you can’t find better price for that amount of meat and quality. Still that high content of meat provides all necessary high quality nutrients and lower content of starch is appropriate for itchy yeasty dogs.
The variety include:
3) Acana Singles (50% of meat)
Acana singles is recommended when the dog has an allergy to any meats in the other Acanas. They come in the variety of Duck, Lamb and Pork.
The prices for 25lbs bags are between $70.99 to $75.99
A word of caution – We don’t recommend Acana Singles for for yeasty dogs!
If you want to feed Acana Singles because you think your dog has allergy, make sure her symptoms are not related to yeast (itchiness, red stains, re-occurring ear infection). If your dog is yeasty and has an allergy to most of meats, we recommend Acana Regional (70%) Wild Atlantic.
This food is made from duck, salmon and turkey and all the meats are fresh. They even do not include any meals. This food has about 50% of high quality meat and we recommend it in a few cases:
We don’t recommend Pecturean Now to itchy dogs with yeast issues.
Fromm is an excellent food with excellent reputation. It is known to people who want to feed their dogs healthy foods. 100 years and 5 generations in one family, that dry food has never had any recalls. It uses good quality meats and alternating flavors within a line is very easy. However, Fromm has 4 lines of foods so make sure you understand which line is appropriate for your dog!
In that line Fromm has 2 different sub-lines: Grain Free and with grains. Make sure you know which one you are buying.
(in metalic mat bags) has about 60% of meat (based on our own analyses) and this is the variety we highly recommend. It comes in different flavors which we recommend alternating them so your dog gets a lot of different nutrients.
The prices for 26lbs bags are about $69.99
has much lesser amount meat but the same quality as Fromm GF. Based on our own analyses, that food contain about 40% of high quality meats. The grains used in that variety are consider good grains (rice, barley, oatmeal) but non-the-less they are grains. If your dog has yeast issues or is itchy, this food is not recommended.
It’s a budget friendly variety and the prices for this variety are fantastic between $53.99 to $56.99 for 30lbs of food.
