Types of the foods at Well Bred:
Food generally falls in the following categories: raw, freeze and air-dried, dehydrated, canned and dry (kibble).
Frozen Raw Foods
Raw frozen foods are considered the healthiest dog and cat foods available. They are made from fresh meat, not treated with hormones or antibiotics and the ones we carry, don’t have any starchy fillers in them.
That food is grounded and frozen and it looks like fresh hamburger meat but of course, it’s more complicated than a hamburger.
In short, raw food is made from meat consisting of 60% muscle meats, 30% organs (hearts, liver), 10% of bone and an appropriate amount of animal fat. That make-up mimics the whole prey model or in other words, what your dog or cat would eat if they can catch their own food. That makes the food complete which is very important as each of those elements have their own function.
For example, if there is not enough fat, the food will have too much protein and that can prompt the body to make too much uric acid. If there is not enough bone, not enough natural calcium will cause phosphorus to increase. Bone also works as fiber and firm the stool. In cat food, bone is replaced by eggshell that has the same function. Organs are necessary for other nutrients and minerals.
Most of the foods we carry have 90-100% meat content. The rest are non-starchy veggies, fresh eggs, sometimes fish or fish oil.
Starchy vegetables/fillers are very high in sugar (high glycemic index). Starch feeds yeast making dog itchy, promotes ear infection and alter guts flora. Starch also is responsible for big puffy stool. This is why prefer foods that don’t have any starches in them.
Raw food has a very high content of moisture, therefore the protein and fat content is very low – usually about 15% protein and about 10% healthy fat. That food is very easy to digest but it requires a gradual introduction if the dog(cat) has digestive issues.
All raw foods are 100% tested for harmful bacteria and based on FDA information, they have the lowest incidence of recalls. It’s because of extra steps ensuring clean meats and the way they are handled.
Some of those foods use Fermentation or High-Pressure Processing to prevent bad bacteria. Fermentation is the oldest method people used to prevent the food from spoiling or making water drinkable. HPP process kills bad bacteria by using high pressure, however, it also kills good enzymes and beneficial flora so it is a bit controversial.
Feeding raw foods is very easy but more expensive than feeding classing dry food in the form of kibble as this is food made 90-100% from very high-quality meats while dry foods don’t use that quality of meats and the meat content is much lower.
Foods with a high content of meat are more filling so you will feed much less than dry or canned foods.
Freeze-Dried and Air-Dried Foods
Freeze-dried foods are next on our list of healthy foods. They are basically raw foods with the same proportions of muscles, organs, bone, fat, and veggies that have been freeze-dried. That methods saves nutrients and was originally developed to dry astronaut foods. They are made in the form of dried patties, nibbles or mixers and very easy to serve. Since they are very dry, they should be hydrated with water or raw goat milk and serve in mush consistency.
Those foods provide a combination of healthy and convenience as they don’t need to be refrigerated. The only inconvenience is that they should be hydrated with water because they are very dry.
Freeze-dried foods are more expensive than Raw frozen foods because of the extra step of freeze-drying. Therefore, we recommend them mostly to the owner of small dogs or cats or as a food topper (to increase a meat content) for bigger dogs.
Dry Food (Kibble)
Dry Foods can be of great quality or can be very low quality despite big advertisements and using the word “healthy”.
Dry foods are a mixture of meat (or meat products) and starchy veggies so they can be formed into the kibble. Dry food is a very convenient way of feeding and for years we were made to believe that it was the only way to feed a balanced diet. But the reality is that dry foods are “processed food” in human terms. For more details about it see our article Dog Food – Mysteries Uncovered!
We realize that in many situations, dry food is the best option for the pet’s parents and therefore, we have a good selection of dry foods that we carefully researched. Our foods cover most of the needs and most of the budgets.
At Well Bred, we focus only on foods that have high-quality ingredients and higher content of meat. Ideally, we want to see 60%-85% of meat in the food as that 85% drops down to about 50% after the food is cooked. It means that the rest of the food are starches.
Starches usually increase sugar in the blood higher than table sugar and are inflammatory and change the acidity of the dogs’ and cats’ digestive systems (dogs’ IG track is acidic unlike people) and if there are too many starches, they may impair good bacteria in the stomach and digestive function. However, it’s physically impossible to make dry foods without starches. Therefore, we focus on foods that have fewer starches and more meat. Some starches are better than the others and we only focus on foods with “better” starches.
Therefore, we don’t carry foods containing wheat, corn, and soy, because they have a very high glycemic index (90 vs table sugar of 67), are sprayed with roundups and some of them contain highly inflammatory gluten.
We also don’t carry any foods that would have any by-products and any gluten meals or flavors.
Wet Food - Cans & Pouches
Canned food is usually considered more appropriate for our dogs and especially cats because it contains a high content of moisture and is less processed. It also provides more variety of meats and texture. But it’s only true if the food is made from good ingredients and in fact it has a high content of meat and not flavored corn or soy pretending to be meat.
At Well Bred, we focus only on high meat content, high-quality meats foods that don’t have any wheat, corn, soy, by-products, and gluten meals. We carry the same philosophy for can foods See a guide on canned foods here:
Cat Foods
Cat as ultimate carnivores should eat high meat content foods. The most appropriate foods for cats are those with high moisture content. Therefore we recommend Raw, Freeze-Dried (hydrated with water or raw goat milk) or cans.
Since cats tend to be picky we offer a big variety of flavors, textures, and types. If your cat doesn’t eat moisture foods, we offer high-quality dry foods that don’t contain much of the inflammatory starches and don’t change the ph of your cat's digestive tract.
It's the same philosophy that we use when selecting dog foods.
